    Herend Reserve Collection Elk
    Herend Reserve Collection Elk $4,135

This figurine was designed by sculptor Janos Toth and introduced in 1957. A very popular figurine in its original natural coloration, it is now available for the first time in a shaded brown fishnet style. The elk figurine appears to be engaging in a behavior known as “bugling” which happens during the mating season (also known as the rut). Bugling is a very distinctive vocalization which begins deep and resonant and then becomes a high pitched squeal before ending in a succession of grunts. Similar to a preening peacock, this bugling serves to attract females during the very competitive mating season. While one can only guess as to this figurine’s success, he can be confident he looks his best since 19 artists took over 18 hours to create his powerful appearance. (11.5"L X 11.5"H)

    Herend Reserve Collection Sphinx
    Herend Reserve Collection Sphinx $9,295

The Sphinx is dressed in a breathtakingly intricate design called Tattoo, which takes a Herend artist seven full days to paint. Because tattooing was practiced by the ancient Egyptians 4000 years ago, the design was a natural choice for Herend’s Sphinx. Egypt’s Great Sphinx was named after a legendary Greek creature with the body of a lion and head of a woman. The word sphinx in Greek means “to strangle,” as the sphinx from Greek mythology strangled anyone incapable of answering her riddle. Just as the Great Sphinx of Giza required monumental work to construct, twenty-five pairs of hands are involved in creating Herend’s version. Each must be fired at least six times, as compared to three times for typical Herend figurines. Limited Edition Size 250. (11.5"L X 6.5"H)

    Herend Reserve Collection Tropical Reef
Herend Reserve Collection Tropical Reef $8,675

It takes one Herend painter 4 days to create this masterpiece which consists of 40 different components. Only a complex figurine could properly convey a coral reef- known as the busiest neighborhood in the ocean. Often referred to as the rainforest of the sea, the diversity and colors of the animals inhabiting a coral reef is unmatched anywhere else in the aquatic realm. While many theories abound, there are two popular thoughts as to why the fish in a coral reef are so colorful and textured. First, the reef and its inhabitants reflect so many colors that the fish are just doing their part to blend in with their surroundings and be less obvious to predators. Their colors act as camouflage. A second reason is that the colors and patterns allow fish to identify friend and foe and find their own kind in the crowded reef environment. With Herend’s tropical reef, the viewer has stumbled on a symphonic fishnet celebration with blue, key lime, and butterscotch fish dancing through the welcoming arms of a key lime coral dappled with 24K gold. Conch shells, sea snails, brain coral and starfish, while not as exuberant as their fish friends, add their own style of fun to the neighborhood party. Limited Edition Size 100. (8.5"L X 13.5"H)

    Herend Reserve Collection Canadian Ducks
Herend Reserve Collection Canadian Ducks $4,705

Two impressive painting techniques combined in one striking figurine: symphonic fishnet coupled with faux bois! Two Canadian ducks pose in their feathery finest with alternating colors of yellow, green, brown and terracotta fishnet offset by dramatic gold highlights. Their coy expression could be attributed to the fact that they know a secret: the logs they are sitting on aren’t real. Herend artists have done a masterful job painting in the faux bois style and only a close-inspection reveals the true porcelain composition. Limited Edition 250. (9.5"L X 7.75"H)

    Herend Reserve Collection Large Giraffe
Herend Reserve Collection Large Giraffe $4,170

Herend’s newest figurine will no doubt incite similar curiosity to those first “diplomatic” giraffes since their newest introduction is an ambassador of creativity. Showcasing an unusual spin on traditional fishnet, the reserve collection giraffe features a modified fishnet made to look like animal print. This new fishnet technique is a complex process. It takes one artist over 20 hours to paint since it requires much concentration as the artist has to create “unnatural” breaks to mimic the spots - contrary to the usual, fluid style involved with painting fishnet. Herend Reserve Collection Twirl Rooster
Herend Reserve Collection Twirl Rooster $1,960

While the hands are busy, the artistic mind wanders to dreams of a variation on a theme of fishnet. Not quite a revolt, but after 153 years of painting the fishnet pattern, the creative team at Herend wanted to spread their wings. A chance to make a change at once both subtle and bold where a quick glance would still reflect the rhythmic pattern of fishnet but further scrutiny would reveal an altered state. Similar to the way the internal mirrors of a kaleidoscope adjust reality and reflect things back in a new geometric fashion, the artists at Herend pushed fishnet to the furthest corners of their imagination to see what they could find. Many new patterns were created and two were deemed dramatic enough to make their debut. He is certainly proud enough to carry the premiere on his shoulders and, yet, it wasn’t just his cocky countenance that made the rooster the obvious choice for the kaleidoscope treatment. Rather, it was an ability to close the circle since it was a long-lost relative, a rooster figurine in 1858, which first enticed a painter to dress a figurine in Herend’s signature fishnet pattern. Limited Edition 100. (6.25"L X 9.25"H)

    Herend Reserve Collection Rothschild Birds
Herend Reserve Collection Rothschild Birds $2,490

Suddenly, the garden was devoid of any melodic tunes. A serious tone had overtaken the usually noisy expanse as word spread quickly that the Baroness de Rothschild was missing her pearl necklace. Ignorant of the disturbance, two songbirds are chattering away excitedly about their recent discovery. Once they realize who the rightful owner is, the songbirds will do the honorable thing because they proudly demonstrate their loyalty to the Rothschild household by the dramatically painted pattern on their wings. Their blue, green and brown fish scales have become intertwined with the Rothschild name and story. For the first time, the Rothschild Bird pattern has been rendered in sculptural form. Offering a stylized depiction of the birds, this lovely figurine brings to life the story including the tree that anchors all 12 Rothschild Bird motifs, the colorful buzzing insects as well as the famous pearl necklace. Herend Reserve Collection Swirl Hen
Herend Reserve Collection Swirl Hen $1,335

It was a rooster figurine in 1858 which first enticed a painter to dress a figurine in Herend’s signature fishnet pattern. Of course, the ensuing fame only added to the rooster’s bravado around the farmyard. With word of two new patterns making their grand entrance in 2011, the long-suffering hens marched on the manufactory and demanded equal time in the spotlight. They are proud to feature one of their own in a dramatic debut of swirls and curls and kaleidoscope dreams. Limited Edition 100. (5"L X 7.25"H)

    Herend Reserve Collection Weather Vane
Herend Reserve Collection Weather Vane $2,095

A strong north wind blows in Herend today and the locals say this means cold weather is coming. While modern technology may end up providing a different weather report, the rooster is merely doing what he has been doing since the 9th century AD when a papal edict stipulated that each church must be adorned by a cockerel. Since many church steeples already featured a weather vane, it was a natural step for the rooster to become the default weather vane motif. While his traditional copper coloration is nothing new for a weather vane, it is the first time a Herend figurine has been painted in this fishnet color (with additional drama provided by the new blue, sapphire, on the wings, tail-feathers and base). However, contrary to his brethren in the field, the patina of Herend’s weather vane will never change with oxidation and his heart remains forever porcelain. Limited edition size of 100. 7 ¾" x 4 ½" x 13 ½"h.

Herend Reserve Collection Madonna & Child
Herend Reserve Collection Madonna & Child $8,580

Herend’s Madonna & Child is based on a Gothic wooden statue from (circa) 1420 called the Second Madonna of Toporc which is housed in the Hungarian National Gallery. The porcelain version made its debut in 1940 when artist Kata Gacser reinterpreted the image for the manufactory. In 2009, this figurine is being introduced for the first time in a mantle of forget-me-nots. Based on medieval legend, the pairing of the Myosotis pattern (botanical Latin for forget-me-not)with this figurine has significance beyond the purely aesthetic. Legend has it that the Christ child was sitting on Mary’s lap one day and said that he wished that future generations could see the beauty of her eyes. He touched her eyes and then waved his hand over the ground and the blue of her eyes appeared forever in the form of the forget-me-not. It takes 3 painters a combined total of 48 hours to create this figurine. Limited Edition Size 250. (5"W X 22"H)

Herend Reserve Collection Silk Road Elephant
Herend Reserve Collection Silk Road Elephant $6,405

This striking elephant is a replica of an antique figurine depicting an elephant carrying goods along the silk road. The silk road was an interconnected series of ancient trading routes stretching from China to the Mediterranean Sea. The silk road not only served as a means of moving precious commodities back and forth but was also significant for bringing new cultural influences. This Pink Elephant figurine certainly demonstrates this Eastern influence through its highly ornate decorative style including the dramatic rug on its back. The figurine was reissued from the Herend archives to commemorate the Manufactory’s 180th anniversary. Limited edition size of 180. 10 ¼" x 3 ½" x 9 ½"h.

    Herend Reserve Collection: Horse Bust
Herend Reserve Collection: Horse Bust $3,680

Quiet dignity, abundant grace and unbridled spirit are adroitly captured in Herend’s porcelain portrayal of one of society’s best-loved animals. Although horses’ earliest contact with man was around 30,000 B.C., domestication wasn’t seen until 3000 B.C. in China where horse-drawn carriages were used in wars. Horses became a popular subject in Roman art, and they gained further recognition by cowboys and American Indians who relied heavily on them for survival. The word “equus” – meaning horse – originated in ancient Greece and means “quickness.” Seventeen craftspeople give form to Herend’s magnificent horse bust, which requires three days to paint. Herend Reserve Collection Carnival Woman with Mask
Herend Reserve Collection Carnival Woman with Mask $3,685

Imre Schrammel, who served as artistic advisor to the Herend manufactory for a time, was inspired to design the carnival figurine series after experiencing Venetian Carnival first-hand. Schrammel, a world-renown ceramic artist, described the collaborative process with the Herend artists who bring to life his craft as that of a composer who has his work performed by a superlative orchestra. Similar to the Venetian revelers whose costumes become more elaborate every year, Schrammel has an appreciation for what Herend artists can accomplish using his Carnival series as a blank canvas. This year, the mysterious man and the enigmatic woman have been transformed into a walking celebration of the 160th anniversary of the Queen Victoria pattern. Dramatic green stripes highlight peonies and butterflies while only a tell-tale scarf hints at the reveler behind the mask. Limited Edition Size 100. (16"H)

Herend Reserve Collection Carps at Dragons Gate
Herend Reserve Collection Carps at Dragons Gate $2,945

In the Shanxi Province of China, the most spectacular in a series of steep gorges that squeeze the languid Yellow River into a raging torrent is called Dragon’s Gate. It is common for carp to gather there. The name of the gorge arises from the belief that any carp which can surmount the waterfalls in the area will go on to soar into the sky and transform itself into a dragon which is the most powerful and divine creature in all of Chinese mythology. The carp is the only fish with the strength and courage to swim against such rapid currents and therefore it has come to symbolize perseverance and achievement. In fact, the expression “Carp jumping over the Dragon Gate” is often used as a metaphor for students who have passed their examinations. In Feng Shui, carp represent success, prosperity and good fortune. When presented as a pair, the double carp also symbolize harmony and marital bliss. With Herend’s interpretation, the difficulty of the task at hand is aptly conveyed by the angry blue rapids which appear to be reaching up to tear the carp back down. The ornate gold gates with the vivid rust detailing beckon with their promise of good fortune to come. On the carp themselves, the use of the strong rust color contrasted with the gold fishnet captures the energy of the fish and the vibrancy of the sun’s rays cascading off the wet and iridescent fish scales as the carp struggle upstream. Available in a limited edition of 250, the figurine is 7.5” long and 7.25” tall. Limited Edition Size 250. (7.5"L X 7.25"H)

    Herend Tesserae Tortoise
    Herend Tesserae Tortoise $3,685

As much as the strength of porcelain is celebrated, the wrong trajectory as a piece falls out of an artist’s hand can still yield broken shards. A natural hazard of life at the Herend manufactory has consequently inspired the dramatic Tesserae Tortoise (available in a limited edition of 250). Taking its name from the small pieces of stone, glass or ceramic used in mosaics, thirty-eight different Herend patterns create a mosaic-like composition on the tortoise’s shell. A crossroads of east meets west and past & present: four chinoiserie patterns anchor the center stripe of the turtle’s back while flanking the center tile featuring the Sèvres Petites Roses pattern which takes inspiration from French artistry. A medley of fruits and flowers dances around the rest of the shell. The tortoise himself is painted in the new, complementary key lime fishnet which draws out the subtle nuances of the many greens. It takes 5 different Herend artists a combined total of 19 hours to paint the entire figurine. Limited Edition 250. (8.75"L X 3"H)
